LIGHTENING TOOTH STAINS AND TOOTH DISCOLOURATION

Achieve a Brighter Smile

Many patients are concerned about tooth discolouration and stains, and are looking at ways to safely whiten teeth. Professional teeth whitening by a dentist helps lighten teeth more effectively and safely than even the best teeth whitening kits available over the counter. At South Oak Dental, we offer tailored treatment options to help you achieve noticeable whitening results, while overseeing the process to reduce any risks.

Professional

Teeth Whitening Process

IN OFFICE

Professional strength whitening gel is carefully applied, ensuring it doesn’t wash away or touch the gums. A special LED light is used to increase whitening and reduce the length of the treatment. You are monitored throughout to make sure your teeth whitening treatment is going safely and is working well.

The in-office treatment offers the most significant whitening, in just one visit. Patients with severely discoloured teeth may choose to have a second treatment, however.

CUSTOM AT-HOME TEETH WHITENING KIT

Plastic trays are custom fitted to your teeth, to ensure teeth are covered well but the bleaching agent won’t irritate your gums. This is a good option if you would prefer to whiten from the comfort of your home, as you can still get professional results, but more conveniently. An impression or digital scan is taken of your mouth for the trays to be custom made from, for safer and more effective results.

Once your trays are ready, you will be given them, along with specific instructions. You use these trays daily to apply the whitening paste or gel for a few weeks.

Why Whiten Teeth Professionally?

BETTER WHITENING RESULTS

An off-the-shelf or home whitening solution only lightens one to two shades, and can take several treatments to work, while an in-office professional whitening can achieve eight shades in just one session for more noticeable results.

In some cases of yellow teeth due to thinned tooth enamel, which allows the yellowish dentin layer to show through, these options may even lead to worse discolouration as they erode enamel further. We ensure the tooth whitening process will be effective in your situation, or whether you may benefit more from an alternative treatment.

A dentist-supervised whitening treatment uses a stronger concentration of hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. Because the treatment is supervised, it is possible to have a higher concentration for a shorter time, while commercial products rely on lower concentrations being used over a longer period and multiple treatments.

SAFER TREATMENT

Whitening under the supervision of a dentist is also safer. Your teeth will be checked to make sure your tooth enamel is healthy enough, and to make sure you don’t have any tooth decay. Whitening while you have a cavity is painful and can damage the tooth. Dr. Sidiura will treat any concerns like this, so you can whiten safely and with minimal tooth sensitivity.

Teeth whitening strips and trays that are not custom fitted to you can result in the bleaching agents touching and aggravating your gums, as well.

We monitor your dental health during the tooth whitening process. With professionally monitored in-office treatments or custom-fitted take-home whitening trays from a dentist, the risks of gum recession and irritation, as well as tooth sensitivity, are reduced.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS

Some patients may not achieve the results they are looking for with teeth whitening. Patients with thinning enamel, extensive dental restorations that don’t bleach, discolouration due to health or medications, and other concerns may need alternative solutions. Teeth that are discoloured from causes like these do not whiten well. Dr. Sidiura can recommend an alternative treatment plan, such as veneers, to help in cases like these.
