Fitting Partial and Complete Dentures

Filling in a Gap from Missing Teeth

Benefits of Dentures

South Oak Dental conveniently offers denture services for our patients in the Oakville area with an in-house denturist. Dentures are an excellent solution for many people who are missing teeth. They improve your ability to chew and enjoy foods, compared to leaving a gap from missing teeth. Dentures provide essential support to facial muscles, preventing the sagging and sunken appearance that often accompanies tooth loss. Dentures also help with clearer speech, making it easier for you to communicate properly without the negative impacts of a gap.

Methods of Supporting Dentures

There are few ways to support dentures depending on whether they are complete or partial dentures. Complete dentures can be made to rest on your tissues, achieving a great fit and seal which will keep the dentures in place. Alternatively, we can also fabricate implant supported complete dentures that use implants for added retention for situations where tissue supported retention is not enough. For partial dentures, if they are tooth supported, clasps to achieve retention are used. Or if they are tissue supported, parts of the partial denture resting on the edentulous area for support is the technique utilized.

Denture Fitting Process

The process of fitting you with dentures will begin with a comprehensive examination by our dentist, Dr. Sidiura. He will take impressions, measurements, and consider factors such as your facial structure, bite, and oral health.

After your initial assessment, a dental laboratory creates a set of custom dentures that are tailored to fit your unique specifications, as identified during your assessment. Dr. Sidiura will discuss with you how your dentures will be secured, and guide you on how to care for them and remove them and replace them, as applicable.

The fitting process may require a couple of appointments, to ensure your custom dentures are adjusted as necessary for a comfortable and secure fit. During those fitting appointments, Dr. Sidiura will check your bite to assess the fit and comfort of the dentures. Let us know if you have any discomfort or fit issues. This makes sure they are adjusted properly for you.

Maintaining Dentures

Proper maintenance is essential to help your dentures last a long time, keep them clean, stay comfortable, and work properly. Regular cleaning helps prevent issues such as bad breath, staining, and bacterial buildup.

Dentures should be brushed daily with a soft brush and mild denture cleaner to remove food particles and prevent staining. Soak removable ones overnight in a denture cleaning solution to maintain their shape and keep them moist. Clean your gums while dentures are removed, softening the toothbrush with warm water.

Dentures are delicate and should be handled with care to avoid breaking them. When not in use, they should be stored in a denture cup filled with water to prevent them from drying out. Regular dental check-ups are important, to ensure your dentures continue to fit properly and to address any potential issues promptly.

Other Tooth Replacement Options

We also offer other tooth replacement options, including dental implants, which are surgically placed in the jawbone for a permanent solution to missing teeth, and dental bridges, which are fixed prosthetics that bridge the gap between missing teeth and rely on adjacent natural teeth or implants for support. We can discuss the various options at your appointment if you wish. However, dentures are a good choice for those who need to or wish to avoid surgical procedures, preferring a non-invasive option, or for those who are not ready to commit to a permanent solution. They are also a good solution for those who are missing several teeth, instead of just one or a few.

Types of Dentures

There are a few different types of dentures available. The ones used for you will depend on how they are secured, the extent of tooth replacement required, and other considerations. You can have conventional dentures, which are created after any tooth extractions and the healing process is complete, and ensure a precise fit. Alternatively, immediate dentures are ready-made to be worn immediately; adjustments may be necessary as the gums heal and change.

Partial Dentures Oakville

Partial dentures are used when you still have some healthy teeth remaining. Partial dentures are sets of replacement teeth attached to a metal or plastic frame, which clasps onto your remaining natural teeth. A partial denture fills the gaps created by missing teeth while also preventing the remaining natural teeth from shifting.

Full dentures are used if you are missing all of your natural teeth in your upper or lower jaw, or both. They consist of a complete set of artificial teeth mounted on a gum-colored acrylic base. The base sits directly on your gums and is custom-made to fit the contours of your mouth. Alternatively, we can also place dental implants to help retain the denture for better fit, retention and stability.
