INVISALIGN® TREATMENT PROCESS

CLEAR ALIGNERS ARE AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL BRACES

WHAT IS INVISALIGN & HOW IS IT DIFFERENT THAN TRADITIONAL BRACES?

CLEAR ALIGNERS VS. METAL BRACES

Invisalign treatment is a popular alternative to traditional braces for straightening teeth, repairing minor gaps, and aligning bites. It involves clear aligners that are custom-fitted and removable, limiting the need to restrict what you eat and drink. Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible whereas traditional braces consist of metal brackets attached to the teeth connected by wires. Traditional braces can sometimes make it a little tricky to eat certain foods and brush your teeth effectively, and some might find them uncomfortable when they rub against their cheeks or lips. If any of this is a concern, clear aligners may be the better choice for you. Every patient’s treatment plan varies, however, Invisalign aligners are typically worn for 6-18 months.

Overall, Invisalign treatment is a popular choice among teens and adults who want to straighten their teeth discreetly and comfortably. Clear aligners are an aesthetically pleasing and convenient alternative to traditional braces while still having the same effectiveness.

A BREAKDOWN OF THE INVISALIGN TREATMENT PROCESS

Every treatment process at South Oak Dental will always begin with a consultation appointment to assess your teeth and develop a personalized treatment plan. This is especially important for the Invisalign treatment process so our team can create custom-fitted aligners that will be worn for at least 23 hours a day and updated weekly, however, every patient’s case will vary.

STEP 1: CONSULTATION APPOINTMENT

During the consultation, impressions will need to be taken of your mouth using the iTero 3D Scanner so our team has accurate depictions of which to create your custom-fitted aligners that will gradually shift your teeth into the desired position.

STEP 2: ALIGNERS ARE FITTED

You’ll receive a set of aligners that, as mentioned above, should be worn for at least 23 hours a day. They should be removed while you eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth. Some discomfort and pressure is normal during the first couple weeks of treatment as your teeth begin shifting and getting used to the aligners.

STEP 3: CHECK-UP APPOINTMENTS

Throughout the treatment process, Dr. Sidiura will typically see you once a month to see how the treatment is progressing, to ensure it is going as planned. We’ll make sure your treatment is progressing as planned and that your aligners are still in good condition. This is also the point where you may receive new aligners to continue assisting in moving your teeth into the desired position.

STEP 4: ASSESS YOUR SMILE

On average, Invisalign treatment can take 6-18 months to complete. When we reach that time, we’ll assess your smile and ensure you are satisfied with the results. Once treatment is finished, you’ll be given custom-fitted retainers to wear every night to help maintain your new smile.

MAINTAIN YOUR ALIGNERS BY FOLLOWING OUR CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • DO make sure your aligners are kept in their respective containers when not in your mouth
  • DO make sure that you clean your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste OR clean with a proper cleaner and rinse thoroughly before wearing them again
  • DO brush and floss your teeth before wearing your aligners again

And, with do’s, come a list of don’ts:

  • DON’T eat with your aligners in or drink anything but water as this can damage or discolour them
  • DON’T forget them! Even if you go away for a few days or on a vacation, you’ll need to take them with you. The less time you spend wearing your aligners, the more time your treatment plan will take.
  • DON’T leave your aligners out in the open when not wearing them. This can cause them to dry out and lead to more bacteria buildup.
